In late June, torrential rains caused widespread flooding in South Texas.
Vanna Varcetti and her husband, who live in the Weslaco area, were among those whose house was flooded, but as the basement filled with water, people had time to take shelter on the top floor of the house with their belongings and pets.
But one of their cats, Blanca, had her sights set on a safe haven and chose to hide in the basement, which soon filled with water.
When the water drove Blanca into a dead end, she began to meow loudly and Vanna with her husband heard her voice.
The woman tried to get into the basement from the outside, but she did not succeed, the water in the basement rose almost to the ceiling.

But Vanna’s husband had a different plan. He brought a hammer and an ax and began to make a hole in the wooden floor of the first floor where the cat’s cries seemed to be the loudest.
The woman captured on her phone the moment her husband finally pulled the cat Blanca out of a hole in the floor.
As it turned out, just in time. In just a few minutes, the water rose even higher and the basement was completely flooded. Blanca, on the other hand, was completely unharmed, although she was soaked through.
After a couple of days, the water receded from the area, leaving behind a lot of destruction, including the hole in the floor of the Varcetti house. But in Vanna’s words, “it’s better to have a hole in the floor than in my heart.”
